Waning Days of Summer Watching

Published on 4 September 2023 at 15:51

Once again it’s been just under a month since my last entry. Been watching a few movies, some streamed and some from my own home video collection. Here are the movies I’ve recently watched in the comfort of my home...

Robin and the 7 Hoods- A childhood favorite Rat Pack musical comedy. I still revisit from time to time.

Memory: The Origins of Alien- This is a doc about the movie Alien. Most of the info is also in the “making of…” extras on the home video releases of the film, but there are a few people involved who I had not heard their remembrances before. It’s a good doc, but not a lot of new info.

Reinventing Elvis: The ‘68 Comeback Special- So this is a brand new doc. It takes them a while to get around to talking about the ‘68 comeback special, but when it does it’s really interesting.

Serpico- Embarrassingly, my first time seeing this classic ‘70’s Pacino film. I liked it and Pacino was great in it.

Bull Durham- I was having a down day so I pulled this one out to cheer me up. It works every time. I’ve loved this movie since it came out in ‘88.

Witness- Another ‘80’s classic I hadn’t revisited in a while. It still works pretty well.

It Was 50 Years Ago Today! The Beatles: Sgt Pepper & Beyond- I wish it had covered more of the production of the Sgt Pepper album than it does. It’s mostly a doc covering material, if you’ve seen a few Beatles docs, you already know.

A Man Called Otto- This recent Tom Hanks movie is entertaining enough. It plays a little like a family friendly version of Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino.

The Getaway- Another ‘70’s film I hadn’t seen before. I know Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw hooked up during production of this film, but I didn’t think they had lot of on screen chemistry. The movie’s fine but not the classic I had been lead to believe. You know who shines in this movie? A young Sally Struthers.

Slap Shot- Ok, this late ‘70’s Paul Newman hockey comedy has been a favorite of mine for many years. It hasn’t aged all that well though. It’s kind of homophobic and they use the word “retard” a lot more than I ever remembered. A product of it’s time.

Smokey and the Bandit- The second best movie to come out in 1977. I’ve loved it since my 10 year old self first saw it in the theater.

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah- See full review in TV/Streaming section.

King Kong vs Godzilla (U.S. Version)- A childhood favorite that has become a camp classic.

Eric Clapton: Standing at the Crossroads- A 92 minute documentary with about 45 minutes of interesting material in it.

How the West Was Won- I hadn’t revisited this Cinerama film in ages. This restored version looks great and the film plays pretty well.

Star Wars- Just felt like re-watching this one for the umteenth time. I did watch the original version and not the “special edition”.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues- This inferior sequel to a hilarious film only has a few really good laughs in it. There is an alternate version on the Bluray release that is better than the theatrical cut.

Super Mario Bros. (2023)- I’m not a video game guy so all the game specific images and easter eggs were mostly lost on me. The movie itself is a fine enough family movie.

Get On Up: The James Brown Story- Star Chadwick Boseman does a pretty great job of capturing James Brown’s voice and moves. Unfortunately, he is wasted in this mess of a biopic.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania- My second time seeing this MCU sequel. I still like it. It is certainly flawed but it’s also entertaining.

Paths of Glory- See full review in Classics section.

Smokey and the Bandit II- This first of 2 sequels to the modern classic that is Smokey and the Bandit, has a few laughs but not many. It isn’t anywhere near as good as the first movie.
