Early Spring Watching

Over the past month I’ve made 2 trips to the multiplex but watched quite a few movies at home, along with the series’ I keep up with. Here are the movies I’ve been able to watch from the comfort of my sofa over the past few weeks…

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3- My first revisit since seeing it this past summer in theaters. It’s still fairly emotional and another nice addition to the MCU for James Gunn’s (most likely) final Marvel movie.

The Spy Who Loved Me- Still one of my favorites of the Bond films.

Young Mr. Lincoln- I still really love this John Ford/Henry Fonda film.

Sepia Cinderella- See Classic’s Section for full review.

Orion and the Dark- A cute Pixar-like animated film by a Russian animation company, Mikros Animation, via Dreamworks and distributed by Netflix.

Shenandoah- 1965 James Stewart Western. It’s fine.

Jesse Stone: Night Passage- Still working my way through the Tom Selleck starring TV movie series. This one is pretty good too.

Paradise in Harlem- See Classic’s Section for full review.

Bottoms- I was hoping to like this comedy a bit more. It has it’s moments, but it’s a little messy. For a better film along the same lines I think I’d recommend rewatching Booksmart before recommending this one.

The Equalizer 2- I’m late to this series but, so far, I’ve enjoyed them.

Suncoast- A quiet little movie playing on Hulu. Well worth your time.

This Island Earth- It had been a while since I revisited this SF classic. I still really enjoy it. The thing moves along at a terrific pace.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny- My second viewing of this one. I like it, but it just doesn’t have the same magic of the first 3 Indy films.

Planet of the Apes- This is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I never need an excuse to revisit it. I’ve got nothin’ but love for it.

Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore- It has been a few decades since I last watched this early Martin Scorsese film. It has a few very 1970’s moments that haven’t aged all that well, but is otherwise still very good. Ellen Burnstyn is great.

After Hours- Now this is a Scorsese film that I had yet to see, even though it came out in the ‘80’s when I was seeing nearly everything, it got past me. I think it suffers from time not being kind. It’s a little sexist, but still holds your attention until the end.

The Capote Tapes- A pretty interesting doc from 2019. I didn’t know a lot about the writer Truman Capote but I’m planning on watching the FX series Feud: Capote vs The Swans and was looking for some background. This doc delivers on that and a lot of other interesting things about the man.

Se7en- Another film I hadn’t seen in some time, but I recently added it to my video collection and boy is it still good. This and Silence of the Lambs would make a great double feature.

Dune (2020)- A revisit before seeing part 2 in the theater. I think I enjoyed myself more this time around.

Marlowe- Liam Neeson as Phillip Marlowe, it should have worked, but it’s a kind of boring.

Jesse Stone: Thin Ice- The series is starting to show some weakness here, but the conclusion of this one looks to add new life to the next installment.

Spaceman- See full review in TV/Streaming Section!

Waterworld- I like this film. I’ve probably seen it 3 or 4 times now, but would really like to see the extended version that looks to only be available to watch in 4K.

Godzilla vs Kong (‘21)- A rewatch before the follow up hits theaters later this year. It has it’s moments.

The Equalizer 3- Probably the weakest of the series, but still a good entry.

Poor Things- A weird, adult, and funny flick. It’s a little too long but I enjoyed it.

Oppenheimer- My second viewing. I still enjoyed it.

Rustin- Wow, I really liked this Netflix film about the Civil Rights leader Bayard Rustin. Colman Domingo’s Oscar nom is well deserved. Probably director George C. Wolfe’s (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, which I also really liked) best film yet.
