Into the new year watching

It has not quite been a month since my last check-in but a lot of movies to talk about. This list takes me from the middle of December, the reason for the holiday movies, and the first week of January. I did watch a few episodic shows too, but a lot of movies, so here are the movies I have been able to watch over the past few weeks from the comfort of my sofa…

Holiday Inn- See full review in Classics Section of the site.

Eight Crazy Nights- I hadn’t watched this Adam Sandler animated holiday movie since it’s original release and it is really not that good. The animation is fine, but the crudeness overpowers the heartwarming conclusion they were going for.

Genie- A new holiday movie starring Melissa McCarthy as a genie. It’s fine, it felt like McCarthy was being held back though. I have a feeling that if they’d have let her improvise more she’d have come up with better stuff.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3- I’d only heard about how bad it was, but it’s actually fine. If you like the other two films you’ll enjoy this one too.

Holidate- A pretty predictable romantic comedy from 2020 starring Emma Roberts. She is pretty bad in this movie. I’ve seen her in other things so I know she can act. She just didn’t try very hard here.

One December Night- Each year I choose one Hallmark Holiday movie that I will watch with my wife. This one is from 2021 and stars Bruce Campbell and Peter Gallagher, who bring some emotion to this otherwise predictable Hallmark movie.

No Hard Feelings- Sort of a return to the R rated comedies of the ‘80’s. It’s ok.

Wind River- I hadn’t seen this 2017 Taylor Sheridan written and directed flick starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olson. It’s very Sheridan, I’m a big Yellowstone fan so that’s a good thing. A lot of the supporting players turn up in Yellowstone. I liked it.

The Retirement Plan- A decent action comedy starring Nick Cage.

Aquaman- A rewatch before seeing The Lost Kingdom. Still a good time.

Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken- It’s fine. Unfortunately, Pixar got to the same material with Turning Red first.

Meet John Doe- A Frank Capra classic and a, sort of, holiday movie.

Maestro- Full review in the TV/Streaming section.

Scrooged- A favorite holiday movie of mine. Yes, it’s getting a little dated with it’s 1980’s references, but I still love it.

Candy Cane Lane- I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed this new holiday movie starring Eddie Murphy.

The Night Before- I finally got around to seeing this 2015 holiday comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Anthony Mackie. It’s fine, there’s some good stuff in there.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit- A rewatch for me. This is a pretty decent thriller. Not the best Jack Ryan movie, but respectful.

Good Night, and Good Luck- My first time seeing this George Clooney directed film about Edward R. Murrow’s part in taking down Joseph McCarthy’s communist witch-hunt.

Theater Camp- I expected better from this new comedy. It’s fine.

Empire of the Ants- Read my full write up as part of the Drive-In Movie Memories series in the Geek’s World Blog-- It's A Geek's World After All - It's A Geek's World After All (weebly.com)

Little Richard: I Am Everything- A pretty good doc about one of the pioneers of Rock & Roll.

The Holdovers- I really enjoyed this new Alexander Payne comedy.

When Harry Met Sally- Introduced this classic to my 17 year old daughter. I think she enjoyed what she watched when not on her phone.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb- I hadn’t watched this Kubrick comedy in some time. It’s as good as ever.

The Long Goodbye- My first time seeing this 1974 Robert Altman directed, Philip Marlowe movie, starring Elliott Gould as the gumshoe. I’d heard great things, but thought it was just good.

Jesse Stone: Death in Paradise- This is the third of the Tom Selleck TV movies. Now I need to find the first two. This one is ok.

Saltburn- So, I watched it. This is a wild flick. I still don’t know how I feel about it. I loved Carey Mulligan in a tiny role.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget- This Aardman animated sequel is fine. There are some fun parts but it didn’t seem to bring anything new.
