More Summer Watching

My movie watching continues. This time it has been just a little over a month since I checked in last, but I did fit a few movies in between TV shows and life in general. Here are the movies I watched at home over the past few weeks.

Charlie’s Angels- This was the 2019 version starring Kristen Stewart and directed by Elizabeth Banks. There are some good ideas in there, but all in all it’s kind of a mess.

Deadpool- It had actually been a couple years since my last revisit of the first of Ryan Reynold’s “Merc with the Mouth” movies. It’s still a lot of fun. I’m really looking forward to Deadpool & Wolverine.

Ben-Her- I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this movie over the years. It just holds up. Sure, Charlton Heston gets a little carried away sometimes, but when doesn’t he? It’s a great movie.

Robocop 2- I hadn’t seen this first Robocop sequel in many years. I recalled it being just ok. It’s actually a little better than ok, but still not in the same league as the original.

Migration- Animated duck movie by the Illumination Studio. It’s fine.

It Happened Tomorrow- An interesting 1944 comedy about a guy who gets the next days newspaper and uses it to help him keep his job and land “the girl”. It’s not a laugh riot, but it’s enjoyable enough.

Highlander- I still love this movie. It really shouldn’t work. A Frenchman as the Highlander, an actual Highlander as a Spaniard, and a young Clancy Brown chewing up the scenery. Somehow the whole thing is magic. I guess you could say “it’s a kind of magic”.

Birth of the Living Dead- 2013 documentary on how the Indy-Horror classic Night of the Living Dead came to be. It’s full of great info and pretty entertaining too.

The Far Country- I think, one of the better Anthony Mann/James Stewart Westerns.

Beverly Hills Cop 2- Not quite as fun as the original, but I do enjoy it. Hoping the upcoming Axel Foley movie is a good one.

Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist- Another terrific doc on a classic horror film.

Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace- Celebrating 25 years since it’s release and still my least favorite of the Star Wars films...and yes that includes the sequels.

Unfrosted- I thought this Jerry Seinfeld directed goofy comedy about the creation of the Pop Tart was funny.

Kelly’s Heroes- A revisit for me. It’s flawed but I do enjoy this WWII/comedy.

Jesse Stone: Benefit of the Doubt- The second to last of the Jesse Stone TV movies. It’s about on par with the others in the series. Not great, but pretty good. One more to go.

Gus- This had to have been a slapped together live-action comedy for Disney. Released in 1976 it’s utter fluff starring Ed Asner and Don Knotts, about a field goal kicking mule. I’m sure I enjoyed it as a kid, but there are only a very few chuckles in it for me now.

Seraphim Falls- 2006 western starring Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan. It’s interesting, not bad.

The Vikings- See Classics section for full review

Moonraker- Universally agreed to be one of the worst Bond movies. It really is stupid, but the Ken Adams sets are so amazing, and Roger Moore so charming that you can’t help but have fun with it.

The Last Detail- My first time seeing this ‘70’s Jack Nicholson classic. I loved most of it, but it does go on a little long and Nicholson’s character gets kind of annoying.

Pretty in Pink- A rewatch with my teenage Daughter. It’s still good, at least to me and my wife. I think you have to have lived through the 1980’s to really appreciate it now though.

Boulevard! A Hollywood Story- This is a very interesting doc about actress Gloria Swanson’s attempt to get Sunset Boulevard made into a Broadway Musical, decades before it actually happened.

Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome- With the Furiosa movie coming out soon a friend told me that he really enjoyed a recent rewatch of this second Mad Max sequel. So I took another look. It’s fine. I still don’t love it. Nothing has beaten The Road Warrior in my book.

Good Grief- Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy wrote, directed, and stars in this “comedy” about a guy who’s husband dies and how he deals with his grief and the realization that his husband had some secrets.

Zone of Interest- Winner of the Best International Film Oscar this past year, this was my first viewing. It’s good, but I think it worked for me better than the rest of my family, who found it boring.
