It’s been about a month since my last check- in and I have had the chance to watch more movies at home than usual. Perhaps it was due to holiday movies, but I was also catching up on a lot of the films released throughout the year that added to the number. Along with watching some episodic stuff like The Penguin, Tulsa King, Dune: Prophecy, Mayor of Kingstown, Lioness, The Ark, and others. So...here are the movies I’ve watched over the past few weeks…
A Quiet Place: Day One- Not bad. Felt like, kind of, a hat on a hat though.
A Clusterfunk Christmas- A spoof of Hallmark holiday movies written by and starring SNL alums Rachel Dratch and Ana Gasteyer. Funnier than I expected.
That Christmas- A new animated Christmas movie. Also not bad.
Nutcrackers- Yet another new Holiday movie, this one stars Ben Stiller and Linda Cardellini. Better than I expected.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story- A great documentary. I dare you not to sob while watching.
Twisters- Having not been a fan of the original Twister, I was surprised that I enjoyed this one.
Dear Santa- Another new Holiday movie, this one with Jack Black. Please, don’t bother.
Expen4bles- I am a fan of the franchise and I didn’t hate this one. It is the worst of the series though.
It’s a Wonderful Knife- Better than it has any right to be.
Cyndi Lauper: Let the Canary Sing- Another very good documentary.
Emelia Perez- Terrific performances, but I can’t say I enjoyed myself watching.
Trap- M. Knight Shyamalan’s latest. It’s ok. His daughter, Saleka, is surprisingly good in it.
Joker: Folie a Deux- I was a passing fan of the first movie. This one really didn’t hold my interest.
Conclave- A very weird ending doesn’t help this otherwise thrilling film. Ralph Feinnes is great.
The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland- I imagine this being very entertaining to the 12 and under crowd.
Red One- A big budget Christmas movie with The Rock and Chris Evans and it struggles to be clever.
It’s a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie- This Muppet TV movie was made before Disney bought the Muppets. There’s some fun stuff in there but it really lacks the magic Jim Henson brought to his creations.
Christmas Eve- See full review in Classics section.
Die Hard- Showed my 18 year old daughter this holiday action classic for the first time. She liked it, but not as much as she was supposed to. I LOVE IT!!!
Juror #2- See full review in TV/Streaming section.
Elton John: Never Too Late- A decent documentary about Elton John in the early ‘70’s when his career really broke.
Cats- So, like a cat, my curiosity finally got the better of me and I watched this movie version of the hit stage musical. Yes, the CG is sometimes wonky and weird. You can see the missed opportunities in this thing. It could have been done right, so easily.
Jules- Now here’s a little movie about an elderly man who has a flying saucer crash in the garden in his back yard. It stars Ben Kingsley and I highly recommend it.
Challengers- The Zendaya tennis movie. Good performances can’t really save this film for me. I didn’t get it.
A Mighty Wind- One of my favorite Christopher Guest directed movies. It always makes me smile, and I don’t even like Folk music.
You Hurt My Feelings- Julia Louis-Dreyfus stars in this quite comedy. It’s good, if it had been any longer (93 minutes) it would have overstayed it’s welcome.
Mister Roberts- One of my favorite films of all time. Always good to revisit it.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire- My second viewing. It’s still a good flick. I wish it had been a little more funny is all.
Golda- An interesting, but tough to hold your attention, movie about Golda Meir (Helen Mirren) during the Yom Kippur War. It requires some background knowledge, of which I had some, but I could have used more.
Hundreds of Beavers- This is a silly movie, owing a lot to the classic Looney Tunes cartoons like Bugs Bunny and Roadrunner/Coyote. It’s a little too long at 108 minutes.
