Over the past few weeks I’ve taken a look at a few movies at home, along with what seems like a lot of regular television- The White Lotus, The Pitt, Dardevil: Born Again, Mythic Quest, 1923, Ghosts, Elsbeth, The Righteous Gemstones, Will Trent, and Yellowjackets to name a few. With all that TV viewing my movie watching slowed a bit so it has been a little over a month since my last check-in. So...here are the movies I’ve watched over the past few weeks….
Flow- Actually watched this one the day of the Academy Awards where it won best animated feature. It’s good, but no better than The Wild Robot.
Silence of the Lambs- Watched with my daughter and you can hear our discussion on the latest ep of our Podcast. Link in the Podcast section of this site.
Elevation- This monster action movie is fine. Other than the locale, it doesn’t offer much new to the formula of films like A Quiet Place.
Absolute Power- My first time seeing this Clint Eastwood thriller. It’s not bad.
Judy Blume: Forever- A good doc about the author. I never really read any of her books growing up but my wife did and really enjoyed this film.
No Way Out- I hadn’t seen this 1987 thriller is a very long time, but with the passing of Gene Hackman I revisited it. It’s still pretty good, but the years have not been all that kind to it. It’s definitely a product of the ‘80’s.
Pardners- I was hoping for a better time with this Martin and Lewis western comedy, but it’s not that good. Everyone, including the writers and director, seem to be coasting through this thing.
Hellboy: The Crooked Man- With a bigger budget and a star with a little more charisma this would make a very good Hellboy movie. I was expecting it to be worse but it is an improvement over the David Harbour effort.
The Electric State- This Russo Brothers flick should have been better. As it is, it’s fine. Entertaining enough at times, but lacking in heart.
Moana 2- An ok follow up to a modern Disney classic.
Amadeus- It had been a few years since my last revisit. I’ve always enjoyed this movie and it still delivers.
Steamboat ‘Round the Bend- The last movie Will Rogers made, though it was second to last to be released. It’s one of his better films.
The Chronicles of Riddick- I’m a Riddick fan and had recalled this second entry being kind of a mess. On this viewing I liked it a little more. I think it was a little too ambitious and the character works better with a more down and dirty, simpler story.
The Marvels- Showed my wife, who didn’t catch it in the theater. I think it’s a fun action/adventure movie with fun characters. I am not one of it’s haters.
Semi-Tough- I can’t recall if I’d seen this Burt Reynolds/Kris Kristofferson 1977 football movie before. It is a pretty typical 1970’s film. I can’t say I loved it, but I’m glad I watched it.
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee- This made for HBO movie from 2007 is an emotional ride knowing that it’s based on actual events. It’s very good but not the kind of movie you want to turn around a see again right away.
The Cannonball Run- It’s Burt Reynolds, it’s silly, and it’s still fun. Some of the humor is dated and they insist on calling Jackie Chan Japanese, but it’s still enjoyable.
The Longest Yard- I actually watched this one immediately after watching Cannonball Run. I was on a Burt Reynolds kick. I think this movie contains one of his best performances. He can’t rely on his usual schtick and has to play a character. Much better than the remake.
The Andromeda Strain (‘71)- It’s strange that this very talkie movie appealed to me even as a kid. It’s science fiction but not a shoot ‘em up. It unfolds kind of slowly, but with a clock ticking in the story and it never gets boring.
Sasquatch Sunset- Here’s a strange little movie. I had a good time with it, but I could tell my wife was losing interest about a third of the way through.
The Last of the Mohicans (‘36)- Randolph Scott stars as Hawkeye in this one. It’s good, but I think I prefer the Daniel Day Lewis version a little more, mainly due to it’s more respectful treatment of the Native American characters.
Strange Darling- Boy am I glad I didn’t know much about this movie other than it involved a serial-killer. It plays out “out of order” and actually benefits from that format. I liked it.
The Problem with People- Paul Reiser and Colm Meaney play long lost cousins. The American cousin is invited to come to Ireland as a request of Meaney’s character’s ailing father. It’s pretty good.
Star Trek: Beyond- Probably my 5th viewing of this one. The best, in my opinion, of the reboot films.
Not Just A Goof- This is a fun little documentary about 1995’s A Goofy Movie. I recall seeing it when it came out and being surprised as to how good it was. Over the past 30 years it has only grown in popularity. A nice view.
Top Secret!- Pulled this one out of my collection in honor of Val Kilmer’s passing. This was his first movie and the first time I saw him in a movie. It’s not as good as Airplane! but still a very funny flick.
Bruce Almighty- A revisit after many years. I had a really good time watching it. Jim Carey is very funny but doesn’t go as far over the top as in many of his other films and Steve Carell has some really funny moments too.
