Holiday Watching

Holiday watching was spent mostly catching up on the movies of 2025 I didn’t get the chance to see in theaters. So, here are the films I was able to catch, at home, over the past month….

Caught Stealing- This was a surprise. It plays a lot like a Coen Brothers movie. I liked it.

Jay Kelly- Good, but I wasn’t a fan of the ending.

Train Dreams- An amazing, beautiful film that sort of washes over you. It’s my favorite of the year.

The Family Plan 2- A fine enough follow up to a fine enough family action movie.

Nobody 2- Not as good as the first one, but it has its moments. I think they played up the comedy too much in this one though.

The Merchants of Joy- A nice documentary about competing families that sell Christmas Trees in New York City.

F1- Not being a big race car fan, I thought this was good. Too long.  I imagine it plays much better in a theater.

Wake Up Dead Man- Another good “Knives Out Mystery”, though you cannot beat that first movie.

The Amateur (‘81)- This one plays like a movie made in the 1970’s. It’s an interesting concept full of plot holes.

The Amateur (2025)- This remake starring Rami Malek brings today’s technology to the ‘81 movie but suffers from the same issues as that film.

Oh. What. Fun.- A new Christmas movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer. It’s ok.

Eddington- Many people really liked this movie. I thought it didn’t know what it was saying. It played on many issues of the day but never picks a lane and doesn’t really have any likable characters.

Roofman- This one surprised me a bit. It’s an entertaining dramedy with Channing Tatum and Kristen Dunst. Based on a real event. I liked it.

Friendship- If you’d asked me immediately after watching this movie, I’d have told you I didn’t care for it. But as time passed the more, I thought about it, and it turns out I actually did like it.

Battlestar Galactica- This is the theatrically released cut of the pilot for the ‘70’s tv series. It plays quite well.

Sinners- Loved it and am kicking myself for not seeing it in a movie theater.

Wick is Pain- A documentary on the creation and production of John Wick 1-4. If you’re a fan of the series, it’s really good. More info than you would get just off of DVD bonus content.

The life of Chuck- Another one I’m sorry I missed in theaters. This one washes over you and makes you feel good about humanity. And that’s tough right now.

A Minecraft Movie- I have never played Minecraft and know very little about it. Jack Black is the saving grace of this film, and he had to WAAAY overact to make anything work.

Bugonia- I liked this one. I’m not always a fan of Yorgos Lanthimos film, but this one is good.

Metropolis- It’s a classic and the first movie I watched in 2026.

From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money- This made for home video follow up to a very good movie is barely “meh”. I will give it credit for not trying to just remake the original.
