Heat of the Summer Watching Continues

The movie watching always continues, along with things like The Boys, House of Dragons, Star Trek: Prodigy, The Bear, and Extraordinary, which I just finished. I also finished watching the entire run of Peaky Blinders, and started The Dead Boy Detective Agency. Lots of watching. Anyway, here are the movies I’ve had the chance to watch over the past few weeks…

The Boys in the Boat- George Clooney directed this movie from last year about the American Rowing team that went to the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. I enjoyed it. No idea how true any of it is, but it makes for a pretty good movie.

A Man Called Sledge- Ok, so I bought a DVD with 4 westerns on it. Mainly I bought it for the Jimmy Stewart film The Man from Laramie. One of the other movies is A Man Called Sledge starring James Garner, who I enjoy. It has some interesting parts but is otherwise a pretty bad movie.

Terror of Mecha-Godzilla- A Showa classic.

Kung Fu Panda 4- Missed it in the theater, but I enjoy this franchise. It’s fine. Not as good as any of the others in the series.

M*A*S*H- It had been a few years since my last revisit and I still really like this flick.

Monkey Man- Dev Patel wrote, stars, and directed this, sort of, Indian John Wick. It’s not bad, but I think I expected more after all the hype that surrounded it.

The Night of the Hunter- See Classics section for full review

Blue Hawaii- Elvis Presley, 1961, one of the first of his silly musical comedies that his future movies would adopt as their format. This one though is actually goofy but enjoyable. Though I think you have to be an Elvis fan to really get into it.

Some Like it Hot- A revisit to show my daughter. I still LOVE this film.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F- See full review in TV/Streaming section

Cold Mountain- A revisit. My second time seeing it since it’s release. It’s a bit long, but otherwise a good movie. I love Renee Zellwegger’s performance in this one.

The Pink Panther Strikes Back- One of the funnier of the Peter Sellers PP series.

Hers, Mine and Ours- This is the original 1968 with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda. This was one of my Mother’s favorites while I was growing up, so when she visited recently we watched it. It is still a lot of fun.

The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)- I liked it, it’s very stylish, but I didn’t like it as much as I wanted to.

Jay & Silent Bob: Reboot- My first revisit since it’s original release. It’s fun, but you already have to be a Kevin Smith fan to really get into it.

Rock & Roll High School- Introduced my daughter to this niche classic.

The Matrix- Listen to details on “Watching Again for the First Time” Podcast

Deep Sea- This is an odd Chinese animated film. It’s a little like Spirited Away at sea. Not exactly sure how I feel about it, but I’m glad I saw it.

A Matter of Life and Death- My first time seeing this 1946 Powell/Pressburger film. I enjoyed it and the visuals are very cool, especially for their time.

Rocky- Listen to details on “Watching Again for the First Time” Podcast

Thor: Love and Thunder- My second viewing. It’s not bad, but it does have some tone issues. Is it a broad comedy or a drama about death and loss?

The Last Picture Show- It had been several decades since the first time I saw this film. It’s still quite good and, having seen it recently too, has some of the same feelings as American Graffiti.

Faye- See full review in TV/Streaming section

Winchester ‘73- One of the better Jimmy Stewart westerns.

Five Easy Pieces- My first time seeing this one. It was NOT what I was expecting. It’s a little hard to like because it’s so hard to like Jack Nicholson’s character.

Logan- A rewatch. I think I liked it more than in the past, when I had some issues with it.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula- You know, I think I liked this Francis Ford Coppola film when it first came out.

The Producers- Listen to details coming soon to the “Watching Again for the First Time” Podcast
