Summer Olympics time watching

This summer’s watching continues. In addition to the Summer Olympics viewing I’ve been watching season 2 of The Ark, finished season 3 of Harrow (a really good Australian procedural), The Boys, and Batman: Caped Crusader. I did manage to fit some movies in between those shows and here is what I’ve watched over the past few weeks….

Fantasy Island- This is the Blumhouse, PG-13, movie that came out a few years back. There’s some good stuff in there, but the execution wasn’t what it could have been and a couple of the Fantasies weren’t very interesting.

Texasville- Since I watched The Last Picture Show recently, I thought I’d revisit this one too. Nowhere near as good as it’s predecessor, though it has it’s moments.

Deadpool 2- A revisit before seeing Deadpool & Wolverine.

Shampoo- I think this may be my first viewing of this 1975 Warren Beatty flick. It does not live up to the hype.

Tarzan and the Mermaids- Great concept, but it was made about 40 years too early. The studio just wanted one more Weissmuller movie. Even if they shot it in Mexico.

Fantastic 4- I still like this first Tim Story helmed movie. It is certainly flawed but captures a lot of the spirit of the comics.

Paradise, Hawaiian Style- A middling Elvis flick from the mid-60’s.

The Perils of Pauline (1947)- A very fictionalized account of Pearl White, who actually played in the silent Perils of Pauline. It’s not bad.

Schindler’s List- Check out Episode 5 of our podcast for more on this film.

Alien- Check out Episode 4 of our podcast for more on this film too!

Elisabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes- A pretty good doc on Taylor, though it hits fast-forward after the mid 1960’s.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths pt 1- So far it’s a decent telling of the classic comic series.

The Bikeriders- I actually liked this flick and Jodie Comer is AMAZING!

The Blue Angel- See full review in the Classics section!

Major League- It had been quite a few years since I last revisited this baseball comedy. It’s a bit unfortunate that the team they used were the Cleveland Indians. Our complete disregard for a race of people is on full display here. The story itself is still funny, but BOY were we insensitive and oblivious!

Dragnet (1987)- I have loved this Dan Aykroyd/Tom Hanks comedy since it came out. It still cracks me up.

National Lampoon’s Animal House- Check out Episode 6 of our podcast for more on this film.

Finding Amelia- This is a doc from this year that follows a theory that Amelia Earhart’s plane went down in Papua New Guinea. It’s interesting, but they, of course, don’t find any proof.

Bottle Rocket- My first time seeing Wes Anderson’s first film. It also gave us the Wilson brothers- Owen and Luke. It’s good, but Anderson has gone on to make much better films.

Shrek- For some reason I just felt like revisiting this first in what became a franchise. It holds up.

Starship Troopers- When I saw this one in theaters I did not like it. Over the years people have been saying we missed the point and that it’s really a deep, comic, comment on where society is going. Watching it again all these years later, I kind of see where these people are coming from, but, IMO, it’s also not very good.

The Sundowners- Robert Preston and Robert Sterling star in this 1950 western. I’ve got to say that I’ve seen episodes of 1950’s TV shows like The Lone Ranger that were better written. It’s a good concept but bungled and WAY over scored.

Bananas- Woody Allen’s 3rd movie and while not all the gags have aged well, nor were some that great in 1971, there are so many that most still land just like they are meant to.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows- The second Guy Ritchie directed, Robert Downey Jr. starring Holmes movies. I still like the first one best, but this entry is still enjoyable.
