Waning Days of Summer Watching

It’s been a little over a month since I checked in and have had the chance to watch quite a few movies at home over that time. Along with a few series too. Here are the movies I’m seen in the comfort of my home over the past few weeks…

The Librarian: The Curse of the Judas Chalice- The final TNT TV movie of the series. It wasn’t bad. On par with the others. I’ve actually started watching the follow up Librarians television series.

Suspicion- A Hitchcock movie that had gotten past me all this time. It’s a good one and Carey Grant is a little creepy. In a good way.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths pt 2- Second of this animated version of the classic 80’s comic mini-series. They seem to be keeping the major players the same but have definitely made some changes.

The Man from Laramie- Probably the best of the James Stewart/Anthony Mann westerns.

Manhunter- I hadn’t seen this 1986 Michael Mann classic thriller in a while. It holds up. I really enjoyed it again.

Gary- An interesting documentary on actor Gary Coleman. I knew a little of the events surrounding his death, but this film really helps put things in place. It is a little biased, not portraying Coleman’s widow in a very kind light. Otherwise, it’s quite good.

The Magnificent Seven Ride!- The last of the Mag 7 sequels and it’s not terrible. An enjoyable, if predictable, western.

Young Woman and the Sea- I liked this Disney produced biopic of Gertrude Aderle (Daisy Ridley), the first woman to swim the English Channel. I’m sure a lot was fictionalized but as a movie I enjoyed it.

The Lords of Flatbush- This 1974 film brought together future stars Henry Winkler, Sylvester Stallone, and Perry King as greasers about to finish high school and begin the rest of their lives in late 1950’s.

Midway- This is the 2019 Roland Emmerich directed version of the Battle of Midway. It’s not bad, just come for the action pieces not the characterization.

American Dreamer- A surprising little comic-drama starring Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine. It has some slow parts but is overall a nice film.

Three on a Couch- As a kid this was one of my favorite Jerry Lewis movies. It does have a few laughs but is overall a bit sexist today. The part I remembered loving as a kid was still the best part.

Beetlejuice- A rewatch before checking out the follow up Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (review in movie review section).

On the Basis of Sex- Film telling the story of how Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Felicity Jones) dealt with her own struggles in the 50’s to her bringing about a lawsuit exposing sex discrimination in the U.S. The only weird thing is seeing the very Anglo Jones and Armie Hammer playing a Jewish couple named Ginsburg.

The Boy and the Heron- This latest (probably last?) animated film by the great Hayao Miyazaki is an interesting one. It has some of the same feeling as Spirited Away but is more personal with the boy character an obvious version of the young Miyazaki in post war Japan.

Rebel Moon Chapter 1: Chalice of Blood- I purposely did not watch the PG-13 version

first released on Netflix because I knew it wasn’t what writer/director Zack Snyder’s vision was. So, I waited. Now that I’ve seen it, I can say it’s an interesting remake of Battle Beyond the Stars.

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness- 2013 documentary about the simultaneous production of Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises and Isao Takahata’s The Tale of the Princess Kaguya at Studio Ghibli. I liked this look into the factory that has created such classic animated films.

Hotshots! Part Deux- It had been some time since I revisited this follow up. Some of the gags are really dated now, but otherwise it’s still pretty funny.

Roman Scandals- See Classics section for full review

Alien Nation: Millenium- The third of the Alien Nation TV movies. The SPFX are dated and low budget, but I do love me some Alien Nation.

The Man Who Knew Too Much- This is the 1956 version with Jimmy Stewart. A Hitchcock classic.

Fight Club- Believe it or not this was my first time seeing this 1999 Peter Fincher film and I did not know about the twist. I wasn’t overwhelmed with the movie, but it was ok.

Godzilla Minus One- My second time seeing it and my wife’s first. I told her that she could enjoy a Godzilla movie, and she took me up on the challenge. I won! She admitted that it was a good film.

Gambit- Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine star in this 1966 film about a Cat Burgler (Caine) and his plan to steal a valuable bust from a rich Arab. It has it’s fun moments but is definitely a product of the mid ‘60’s. MacLaine’s character is Asian and Herbert Lom plays the wealthy Arab.

Rebel Moon Chapter 2: Curse of Forgiveness- Bloated but fairly entertaining conclusion to Zach Snyder’s space epic.

Sergio Leone: the Italian Who Invented America- I’m not a huge Leone fan, but this doc about the film maker is very interesting.

Avatar: The Way of Water- My second viewing and I may have enjoyed it even more than when I saw in the theater. It’s a really emotional ride.

Six Days and Seven Nights- I’d forgotten Ivan Reitman directed this Harrison Ford/Anne Heche action/Romcom. I recalled enjoying when it came out in the late ‘90’s and it still holds up.

Rebel Ridge- I thought I was in for a modern version of First Blood, but this film is not that. It shares some DNA but is far from a knock off. I really had a good time with this one.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire- A revisit because my daughter will be appearing in a version of the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and many of the events in the play have to do with the events in The Goblet of Fire.
