Summer Watching Goes On

Published on 30 June 2025 at 14:47

I’ve seen some movies over the past month. I’ve also been watching The Bear season 4, Fubar season 2, along with a few other shows, but these are the movies I’ve watched over the past month…

Nonnas- Vince Vaughn along with Lorraine Bracco, Brenda Vaccaro, Talia Shire, Susan Sarandon, and Joe Manganiello star in this feel good comic/drama about a guy who misses his Mom and Grandma so he opens a restaurant where real Italian “Nonnas” are the cooks.

How to Train Your Dragon- Revisited this one in anticipation of the live-action remake (see review in Movie Review section). It’s still a great animated film.

Love Hurts- You can’t not love Ke Huy Quan, so it’s shame he’s caught in this “by the numbers” action comedy.

The Last Showgirl- Finally got the chance to see it. It’s a very good movie and Pamela Anderson is quite good.

Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith- It’s not great, but I can’t help but like it enough that I go back to it once in a while. There is good stuff buried in all the access.

Happy Gilmore- Believe it or not this was my first time seeing this early Adam Sandler comedy. Thought I should see it, with the sequel coming up soon on Netflix. Adam Sandler’s schtick never appealed to me but I ended up enjoying myself.

Touch of Evil- This time I watched the “Preview” version, there are three versions, and it’s better than the theatrical release, for sure. And even that one is good.

Predator: Killer of Killers- I don’t like the animation, it looks like I’m watching someone play a video game, but there was enough in there story-wise that I didn’t dislike it.

Miss O’Dell- This documentary about Chris O’Dell, and American who, in her younger years, in the late ‘60’s, ended up working at Abby Road studios in London and went on to work with such notables of the time as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Jimmy Hendricks. It’s interesting.

Robin Hood (1922)- See full review in Classics Section

White Lightening- This is the Burt Reynolds movie that Gator is a sequel to, and it’s a better film. It’s one of my favorite Reynolds films.

Deliverance- Speaking of great Burt Reynolds films. This one is a classic for a reason.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre- This movie was barely a blip at the box office when it came out in 2023 but it’s actually a fun action/comedy.

28 Weeks Later- Hadn’t seen this one in a very long time and thought I’d revisit it since 28 Years later was about to come out.

Tarzan’s Magic Fountain- Horrible title aside, it’s Lex Barker’s first turn as Lord of the Jungle. You can see the series moving toward being aimed at kids with this one. Way too much Cheetah shenanigans going on.

Dirty Dancing- Check out episode 2 of season 2 of our Podcast- Watching Again for the First Time for more on this one.

Me and Orson Welles- I saw this one when it came out in 2008 and noticed it was on Tubi, so I revisited it. I still enjoyed it and Christian McKay is AMAZING as Welles.

The Thicket- An interesting western from 2024, starring Peter Dinklage, Juliette Lewis, and Levon Hawke (son of Ethan Hawke and brother of Maya). It’s not bad, but the skill of the cast was inconsistent. Dinklage’s character is the only one with any intelligence.

Sally- A really enjoyable documentary about Sally Ride, the first female American Astronaut.

Shane- A classic western. I revisit it every once in a while and I’m always glad when I do.

Paradise Road- Hadn’t revisited this WWII set film in several years. It’s quite good and a twist on the usual prisoner of war movie.

Deep Cover- This new movie stars Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Ted Lasso’s Nick Mohammed as three improv performers who get mixed up with organized crime. There are some funny bits in there, but over all it just doesn’t work most of the time.

Rebel Without a Cause- Another classic I revisited. I will say that out of the three very good films that James Dean made, this is probably my least favorite.

Forbidden Planet- Come one! I’ve loved this MGM classic since I was a kid and it never disappoints. I love it!!

Superman The Movie- Check out episode 3 of season 2 of our podcast- Watching Again for the First Time for more on this absolute classic superhero film.

28 Days Later- A revisit. Still the better of the first to movies in the franchise.

Young Guns- This is a movie that has won me over, over the years. At first I really disliked it, over the years I’ve come to actually enjoy it.

Force 10 from Navarone- This 1978 quasi-sequel to 1961’s Guns of Navarone stars Robert Shaw, Harrison Ford, Franco Nero, and Carl Weathers. It’s fun. Along the line of The Dirty Dozen.
