Summer Watching continues

Another month has passed and I’m still watching. I’m, of course, watching Foundation on Apple+ and finished Stick, which was a lot of fun. Along with Strange New Worlds, I finally finished all of Wynona Earp (meh), and Mobland, but do you know what I’m currently watching that is cracking me up is that new sitcom on Netflix- Leanne. It’s truly funny. Especially if you’re over 40. But we’re not here to discuss TV, here are the movies I’ve watched, at home, over the past few weeks…

The Old Guard 2- See full review in TV/Streaming section.

Jurassic World: Dominion- My second viewing. There is some fun stuff in there. It’s too long and the whole giant grasshopper bit is weird.

Snow White (‘25)- I chose not to see it in theaters because of the poor word of mouth, but I was pulling for it to be good. It’s really not and not the fault of it’s cast. It’s just not very good.

Another Simple Plan- A decent sequel to a decent comic/thriller. They don’t just copy what happened in the first movie, but it’s the same vibe. I think the whole “twins/triplets” thing got a little too “out there” though.

Heller in Pink Tights- I’d never heard of this 1960 western starring Anthony Quinn and Sophia Loren. The trailer makes it look like a comic western romp. It is not and it’s not that good either.

The Fundamentals of Caring- This 2016 dramedy starring Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, and Selena Gomez got past me when it came out. It’s fine. Not bad, not overly memorable.

The Philadelphia Story- I’ve seen it many times and enjoy it each time. This one is the subject of an episode of our Podcast this season too.

Jaws @50- I enjoyed watching this doc on the classic movie Jaws but it really didn’t offer anything we haven’t seen or heard in other films about that movie.

Wynona Earp: Vengeance- I was hoping for something great with this TV movie revisit of the Syfy series, that I had actually just finished watching, but it’s about as good as an average ep of the show.

A Soldier’s Story- Hadn’t seen this one since it’s release in 1984. It’s packed full of terrific African American actors before they “hit”. Including David Alan Grier, Robert Townsend, and Denzel Washington!

Frenzy- Hadn’t seen this 1972 Hitchcock flick before. There is some nice technical work in the film but the story isn’t all that interesting. Yet another “man accused of something he didn’t do” film from Hitch.

The Grapes of Wrath- See Classics section for full review

The Flash- My second time seeing this Ezra Miller version of the DC character that featured the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman. There is a good movie in the middle of that muddle of stuff. It’s the perfect example of studio interference ruining what could have been a fun flick.

Score: A Film Music Documentary- Overall it’s kind of dull with a few legitimately interesting segments.

Tremors- I always have fun revisiting this comic horror movie. It is also the subject of an episode of our Podcast this season.

The Bronze- This is an uneven but worth a look comedy co-written and starring Melissa Rauch, best known for The Big Bang Theory.

Con Air- I hadn’t seen this goofy Jerry Bruckheimer produced action flick with Nick Cage at his Nick-Cageiest in a long time. It is fun.

Happy Gilmore 2- See full review in TV/Streaming section

Easy Come, Easy Go- A watchable, but far from great, Elvis Presley movie.

Train to Busan- My first time seeing it. The Zombie fad has pretty much played itself out by now but this 2016 Korean film is still pretty effective.

Novocaine- This action/comedy finds Jack Quaid playing right in his wheelhouse as the lovable loser. This time as a guy who does not feel pain who gets mixed up in a bank robbery. It has it’s moments.

The Phoenician Scheme- Beautiful looking but overly confusing Wes Anderson movie.

The Accountant 2- It sets out to be a fun action flick and succeeds pretty well.

Poppy- W.C. Fields as a Carny conman trying to make a better life for his daughter. Not a favorite of mine, though it’s a good one.

The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad- A revisit before seeing the new reboot. I’ve never been a big fan of this movie, or it’s sequels but LOVE the original Police Squad TV show.

Hot, Wet, American Summer- A rewatch for me, but my Wife’s first viewing. It’s funny but you have to have seen, at least, a few of those summer camp movies of the late ‘70’s early 80’s to fully appreciate it.
