It’s that time again. Time for me to check in with all the movies I’ve watched over the past few weeks. This time it’s been just over a month. I’ve also been watching a lot of episodic TV. Still working my way through Orphan Black (though I’m finally on the final season), Matlock, Elsbeth, Marshals, Ghosts, and Sheriff Country on CBS. Man on the Inside, Scrubs, Rooster, and Shrinking. Will Trent, High Potential, and The Miniature Wife. Along with The Boys, Daredevil: Born Again, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, The Pitt, and Welcome To Derry. Yikes, it’s no wonder I didn’t watch as many movies at home as usual. BUT I DID WATCH A FEW…
Superman- A rewatch for me but first time for my wife. I found myself really loving the third act and less the beginning. Which was my opposite experience the first time. Either way, I still really enjoyed it.
Peaky Blinders: Immortal Man- I was a fan of the series, but this sequel movie felt rushed.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture- Check out the Blog- It's A Geek's World After All - It's A Geek's World After All for my full thoughts on this 60th anniversary of Trek rewatch.
Being There- It had been at least 30 years since I last revisited this Hal Ashby/Peter Sellers classic. It looks dated but still works.
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang- Believe it or not, this was my first time seeing this Shane Black movie starring Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. It’s good, but not as good as I’d hoped.
Tiny Tim: King for a Day- This is a very interesting doc about the performer Tiny Tim. If you remember him you’ll enjoy it. I’m not sure about everyone who never heard of him. He had an interesting life.
Captain Horatio Hornblower- See Classics section for full review.
A Man Called Horse- I hadn’t seen this one since I was a kid. I certainly understood it more this time around. I didn’t love it but am glad I revisited it.
Rental Family- This is a very nice little movie about an American actor living in Japan who gets a job at an agency that rents actors to portray someone in their life. Here Brendon Fraser’s character is hired to be a young girl’s long-lost father. I enjoyed it.
Anaconda- This is the recent comedy starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd. It’s kind of dumb but more fun than I expected.
Minions: The Rise of Gru- Call it a guilty pleasure. I like this one.
Outcome- See full review in TV/Streaming section.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan- Check out the Blog again for my full thoughts on this 60th anniversary of Trek rewatch.
Network- Here’s another modern classic I hadn’t seen since, at least the ‘80’s. I’d forgotten how funny it was.
The Right Stuff- It had been a while since my last rewatch, but I loved it just as much this time around as any other.
Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice- This Vince Vaughn action comedy, with a time travel twist, has a few nice moments, but is otherwise kind of bleh.
The Island of Dr. Moreau- This is the 1977 version starring Michael York and Burt Lancaster. I hadn’t seen it since its original release as a kid. It’s not bad. The makeup affects are good but imagine what they could have done with a real budget. The script could have used another pass too, but York and Lancaster make the best of it.
Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie- Not all the humor lands today like it did in 1980, but I still enjoy it and laughed out loud.
Sisu- Finally got around to seeing this Finnish WW2 based action flick. It is fun, but downright silly at times too. I will check out the follow up.
Deadpool & Wolverine- A rewatch. Laughed throughout. It’s still a lot of fun. You just have to have a high tolerance for foul language.
Gator- The Sequel to superior film- White Lightening, this time directed by star Burt Reynolds. I think it might have been better were it directed by someone who could keep the star’s ego in check… and I’m a fan.
