It’s been a bit over a month since my last check in, so I do have a nice number of films to let you know about. Here are the movies I’ve watched from the comfort of my sofa over the past few weeks…
Out of the Past- A classic 1947 film noir starring Robert Mitchum I had not seen before. It’s good. Kirk Douglas, Jane Greer, and Rhonda Fleming are the supporting class. It doesn’t start off as an obvious film noir but slowly becomes one.
Dust Bunny- Bryan Fuller’s darkly comic horror flick is, to simplify, sort of “what if a little girl hired John Wick to kill the monster under her bed?” I had a very good time with this one.
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock- Check out the Geek’s World Blog as I revisit all the Trek films this year--- It's A Geek's World After All - It's A Geek's World After All
Primitive War- Dinosaurs in the Vietnam War. An interesting concept hindered by its budget. I will say that for it’s limited budget, the creature effects are pretty good.
Stan Lee- A Disney+ produced doc about Stan “the man” Lee from 2023. It doesn’t present anything fans don’t already know but seeing footage of the Marvel Bullpen in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s is always fun.
The King- 2019 fictionalized film about a young Henry V. starring Timothee Chalamet and Joel Edgerton. It was better than I expected.
The Cowboy and the Little Lady- 1938 romantic comedy starring Gary Cooper and Merle Oberon. If made today it would be a Hallmark movie. I don’t mean that as a burn. This movie already hit the tropes of the Hallmark movies in the 1930’s. It’s fun.
War Machine- This Netflix SF/Action movie had dreams of being the new Predator, but it is actually its own thing. Starring Reacher’s Alan Ritchson, it is sometimes very tropy, but still pretty entertaining AND leaves itself open for an obvious follow up.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind- The subject of episode 1 of season 3 of our podcast-- https://open.spotify.com/episode/3iX7wlTCrXXzpE01z4bV8b?si=_llUTFfCToa0CVebS_iMhw
To Kill a Mockingbird- The subject of episode 2 of season 3 of our podcast- https://open.spotify.com/episode/5ocEII1uhDAu6jTc2cm59Y?si=yOjVxDPvQySVa34-gL-yVA
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home- Again, you can find my thoughts on the Geek’s World Blog as I revisit the Trek films.
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War- Full review in the Television/Streaming section of site.
Kid Galahad- This is the 1937 original starring Edward G. Robinson, Bette Davis, and a young Humphrey Bogart. I rewatched the Elvis Presley quasi-remake a month or so ago and this one is better.
Executive Decision- A movie that still works despite it having a ridiculous premise, a novice director, and the involvement of Steven Seagal. I know it’s not good, but it’s just so much fun.
Hollywood Shuffle- The subject of episode 3 of season 3 of our podcast- https://open.spotify.com/episode/3ZAuDOUdzQyuJCEVn2KtH2?si=l2Met2rHTGyXt_KSiZU2BA
Secret Mall Apartment- A fascinating documentary about a group of artists who took a forgotten space in a mall and turned it into their own secret hangout. Highly recommend.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier- Again, you can find my thoughts on the Geek’s World Blog as I revisit the Trek films.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare- A Guy Ritchie directed WWII film, inspired by actual events, that it is as good as it is mainly due to the efforts of its cast. That includes Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, and Henry Golding.
Tod Browning’s Freaks- The subject of episode 4 of season 3 of our podcast- https://open.spotify.com/episode/6MiCu52mMStC3SJtMtO1y3?si=O9BljDy-QsGChJLXtca3OQ
Send Help- Not one of Sam Raimi’s best, but it isn’t bad. Rachel McAdams stars
Doctor Strange and the Multi-verse of Madness- A total coincidence that I watched 2 Raimi/McAdams movies in a row. Also, not one of his best, but I’m glad I revisited it.
Masters of the Universe (‘87)- I hadn’t seen this one since I watched it in the theater upon its release. I recalled thinking it was kind of fun and, for the most part, it still is. Silly but fun in spite of the whole Golan/Globus of it. Frank Langella is the highlight. He’s chewing up the scenery and having a blast.
