I seem to be back on the “approximately monthly” check in with What I’m Watching. I have had the chance to watch a good number of films at home over the past month. So I’ll get right to it. Here are the movies I’ve watched over the past few weeks…
Just Imagine- See Classics section for full review of this 1930 SF film.
Silverado- It had been a while since my last revisit with this terrific ‘80’s western. It’s so good. I wish Lawrence Kasdan would make another.
Lorne- This doc about SNL producer Lorne Michaels is pretty good. I did learn a lot about the man, but he still is something of an anigma.
Sherlock Holmes in Washington- One of the “war years” entries in the Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce series where they’ve moved the era to the present (1942). Well, the present for them. I imagine that it kept the budgets lower and could act as war propaganda too. The movie is fine, though I prefer the period films.
Sunset Boulevard- Showed my daughter this classic and it’s the subject of an episode of our podcast. Links in the podcast section.
Marty: Life is Short- Another doc about a comedy legend. I’d read Martin Short’s autobiography, so I knew a lot of his story already. It’s the friends and family “talking heads” that bring the joy to its joyful subject.
Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion- It is interesting to see the great costume designer sharing stories, but it gets hung up on who he has designed for when the best parts are when he’s talking about his story.
Shadow of the Vampire- A revisit for me. “What if Max Schreck, star of the original Nosferatu, were actually a vampire?” It’s a fun idea and an enjoyable very dark comedy.
Billy Idol Should be Dead- Yet another documentary. This one, along with the usual interviews, uses animation, to good effect, to tell the story of this rock icon. I liked it.
Duel- Finally! My first time seeing Steven Spielberg’s first movie. It is an effective thriller. I got annoyed a few times because the whole thing could have been resolved by taking a different route, but I enjoyed it.
Pan’s Labyrinth- Showed my daughter this one and it is also the subject of an episode of our podcast.
Tightrope- This ‘80’s Clint Eastwood crime thriller isn’t bad, but it is a little misogynistic.
Destination Moon- At the time, 1950, billed as the most scientifically accurate scifi movie ever. They did do their best bless ‘em.
Independence Day- Showed my daughter this one too and it is also the subject of an episode of our Podcast. Again, you can find links in the podcast section of this site.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence- I hadn’t seen this Spielberg directed Stanley Kubrick conceived movie since it was first released. I recalled being disappointed, but this time around I liked it a bit more.
Pale Rider- This ‘80’s Clint Eastwood western isn’t a classic, but it’s far from one of his worst films either.
An American Tail: Fieval Goes West- I didn’t enjoy it as much as I remember in the past. Though Jimmy Stewart, in his last movie performance, voicing Wyatt Burp is worth the 75 minutes of your time alone.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story- I know it’s over 10 years old, but this was my first time seeing this spoof of musician biopics and it was as fun as I had always heard.
Captain America: The First Avenger- After Avengers: Endgame, this is my favorite of all the MCU movies. I’ve loved it since the first time I saw it and this time was probably my 5th or sixth view.
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die- Gore Verbinski directed this comically tinged cross between 12 Monkeys and a role-playing game. It has some good stuff in it, but I don’t think I’d ever watch it again.
Project Hail Mary- My second time seeing this terrific SF movie. As of today, still my favorite film of 2026.
Enola Holmes 3- I think they took too much time between entries. While it’s not as good as the first one, it’s fine.
Heads of State- I’d been putting off watching this action comedy with John Cena and Idris Elba as the U.S. President and U.K. Prime Minister but it is actually kind of fun. Finally a movie where I liked Priyanka Chopra Jonas’ performance. Don’t expect brilliance, but it’s a fun watch.
